As expected (read our Fed Cup final preview here), Italy successfully defended its Fed Cup title on Sunday by beating USA 3-1.
The only surprise of the week end was Mary Joe Fernandez decision to choose Coco Vandeweghe over Melanie Oudin to play singles on Saturday. A pretty bad coaching decision as Vandeweghe looked like a fish out of the water and lost her 2 matches against Schiavone and Pennetta in straight sets.
It is Italy’s third Fed Cup trophy in five years. Congrats to Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta, Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani.

The women’s season is definitely over: Ana Ivanovic captured the last tournament of the year in Bali. And she’s finally back in the top 20.

Upset of the day: Stanislas Wawrinka defeats Andy Murray
Wawrinka pulled out the biggest upset of this year’s US Open so far: he bounced 2008 US Open runner-up in 4 sets. Murray still can’t win when it really counts.

Match of the day: Sam Stosur defeats Elena Dementieva
Without a doubt one of the best matches of the tournament so far. They battled until 1:37 am, they both had match points, but in the end, the Australian prevailed 6-3 2-6 7-6.

Quote of the day: Tracy Austin about Sam Stosur and Elena Dementieva:

I think they’re hitting harder than the guys in the first match.

US player of the day: Venus Williams
Venus beat 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and qualified for her 10th US Open quarterfinal (in 12 trips to Flushing Meadows). Her next opponent: 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

Stat of the day: 1
There will be at least one spanish player in semifinals as only Spaniards remain in the top quarter of the men’s singles draw: Rafael Nadal, Feliciano Lopez, David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco. Tommy Robredo and Albert Montanes also qualified for fourth round.

Pic of the day: Kim Clijsters
Just impressive: Kim won her 18th straight match at the US Open Sunday, defeating Ana Ivanovic, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. Ivanovic never looked like a former number one and was completely outplayed.

Matches to follow on day 8
Fish vs Djokovic
Wozniacki vs Sharapova

2010 US Open: day 3 recap

– Venus Williams, Elena Dementieva, Andy Murray and Sam Querrey advance to round 2.
Viktoria Azarenka collapsed during her second round match against Gisela Dulko and was forced to retire.

– Andy Roddick’s best days seem definitely over: he was beaten by Janko Tipsarevic in 4 sets in the second round. Tipsarevic also eliminated Roddick in the second round of Wimbledon in 2008, handing the American his earliest defeat ever at the All England Club. Roddick’s chances to win another Grand Slam one day? Close to zero.

– Another disappointing performance for Melanie Oudin, who was a surprising quarterfinalist last year. She lost to Alona Bondarenko in the second round. Too much pressure for the young american?

Upset of the day: Michael Llodra defeats Tomas Berdych 7-6, 6-4, 6-4

Seeds upsets: Azarenka (10), Bartoli (13), Jie Zheng (21), Pironkova (32), Berdych (7), Ljubicic (15)

US player of the day: Ryan Harrison
18 years old Harrison made his US Open debut in style, as he beat veteran Ljubicic in 4 sets. He could be the next big thing in American men’s tennis.

Ana Ivanovic 1

2008: Julie Coin defeats Ana Ivanovic
After surviving a scare in the first round against Vera Dushevina, number one seed Ana Ivanovic crashed in second round. She lost to french qualifier Julie Coin, ranked 188 and making her Grand Slam debut.
Ivanovic, who had been bothered by a thumb injury, cited fatigue and lack of preparation to explain the so-called “biggest upset in US Open history”.
Julie Coin’s magical run ended against former number one Amelie Mauresmo in the third round.
Until Coin’s win, the top seed at the US Open had not lost earlier than the third round when Billie Jean King was ousted in the 1973 tournament.

2005: Ekaterina Bychkova defeats Svetlana Kuznetsova
Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to number 97 Elena Bychkova in the first round, becoming the first female defending champion to lose in the first round.

I tried my best, it wasn’t my day. What do I do? Kill myself? No I don’t. Just take positive things out of this and maybe I’ll try to learn

Following the US Open, Kuznetsova played just 4 matches during the remainding of the year, winning 2 of them.
