Kyle Edmund, 2016 US Open

World number 84 Kyle Edmund, playing his first US Open’s main draw, records the biggest win of his career so far, to beat Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-2 6-2 6-3.

“I’m obviously extremely happy. I was just in the moment for that match, and I’m enjoying it. The crowd were incredible and I didn’t expect this much support, but I’m happy I was able to give back some really good tennis.”

He will now face wild card Ernesto Escobedo ranked 201.

As for Gasquet, who had a 6-weeks injury break, he announced he wasn’t sure to take part to the Davis Cup semifinals early September.

“I’m not sure I could do worse. I knew to come to this tournament would be tough for me. I need matches, I need practice, I need to recover, I need to feel better mentally. I’m not in great form at all.”
