Ivan Lendl’s iconic adidas racquet

October 2, 2010 | Category: Gear | 5 Comments »

adidas started producing tennis racquets in 1974. In the 70s, during the wood era, Ilie Nastase was adidas’ flagship player. But in the 80s, a new star emerged: Ivan Lendl.

Lendl rose quickly in the pro ranks, using a white Kneissl composite during 1980-1981. That frame was called the White Star Pro. In December 1980, Kneissl introduced the White Star Ivan Lendl which was similar to the White Star pro, but additionnally featured the component kevlar.
In 1981, Lendl signed with adidas and started to play with the GTX Pro model, which he would use through 1985. Lendl’s early GTX were paintjob Kneissl, as Kneissl produced the GTX pro frames for adidas in Austria.

In 1986, Lendl started to play with the adidas GTX pro-T until 1990. In 1990, he signed a reported $20 million racket and clothing contract with Mizuno. After Lendl’s shift to Mizuno, adidas lost significant market share and retired from racquet production in 1992, but came back in 2008.

About adidas return to racquets market:
“When they were leaving the racket business back in the early 1990s, they were telling us it was no longer a good business to be in,” Lendl said. “Maybe the climate has changed. Still, I’m very surprised.”

2010 Lagardere Trophy: day 1 recap

October 2, 2010 | Category: Seniors | 5 Comments »

I feel like I’m back from tennis heaven: I spent the afternoon in Paris watching Lendl, Wilander, McEnroe and Edberg play. Here’s a quick recap in photos:

First match between old rivals: Ivan Lendl vs Mats Wilander. This match marks Lendl’s return to the competition.

I must say I’ve been quite impressed by Lendl and Wilander‘s playing level. Mats’ court coverage is amazing and Ivan’s forehand is powerful and precise.

1980 US Open: John McEnroe defeats Bjorn Borg

September 8, 2010 | Category: Books, US Open | 1 Comment »

On September 7, 1980, McEnroe attained glorious and Grand Slam revenge at Louis Armstrong Stadium in 5 exhilarating and draining sets against his polar opposite and favorite dueling partner, Bjorn Borg.

Borg, 24, was the dominant force in tennis, winning 3 straight French Open and 3 straight Wimbledon. He had lost only once in 1980 and was reaping 3 millions $ a year in endorsements. But he had yet to solve the US Open, having lost 2 finals to Jimmy Connors and been upset by Roscoe Tanner in 1979.

After his Wimbledon epic, however, Borg publicly declared himself ready to conquer New York. At Flushing Meadows, Borg overcame Tanner in 5 sets in the quarterfinals, then dropped 2 sets to Johan Kriek in the semies before destroying him 6-1 6-1 6-1. McEnroe, the defending champion was all that stood in his way.

McEnroe had beat up and comer Ivan Lendl in 4 sets in the quarterfinals on Thursday, 5 sets in the men’s doubles final on Friday, and on Saturday outlasted his other archrival Jimmy Connors. McEnroe emerged the victor after 4h16, with a hard fought 5th set tiebreaker.

Lefties like McEnroe had won the previous 6 US Opens, but Borg who had defeated McEnroe in 4 of their 5 previous meetings, seemed unbeatable…

Back in 1990: Sabatini and Sampras win their first GS title – part 2

September 3, 2010 | Category: US Open | 2 Comments »

Pete Sampras defeats Andre Agassi 6-4 6-3 6-2

First all american US Open final since 1979 between two young talents. First Grand Slam final for Sampras, second final for Agassi (beaten by unheralded veteran Gomez in Roland Garros)
In fact, Agassi shouldn’t have played this match: he should have been disqualified during his 2nd round match against Petr Korda for repeated obscenities and spitting at the umpire ( yep, most of you probably don’t remember that Agassi).
In semifinal, Agassi defeated defending champion Boris Becker in 4 sets to win a place in final.

As for Pete Sampras, he ended Ivan Lendl’s run of eight consecutive US Open finals. Ironically, Lendl was a kind of mentor for the young Sampras: the year before, he had invited Sampras to his Connecticut home to be a workout and hitting partner. In semies, the 19 yr old Californian overpowered 4 time champion John McEnroe.

Andre “the wig” Agassi was no match for Pistol Pete: Sampras completely dominated from first point on and Agassi looked like a lost puppy.
