French Open 2010: day 7 recap

Some big names crashed out today at Roland Garros:

– Number 6 seed Andy Roddick was ousted in straight sets by qualifier Teimuraz Gabashvili. I ‘ve seen Gabashvili play twice: once in a Futures tournament in Lille a couple years ago and last Saturday in Roland Garros, when he was playing an exhibition set against Gianni Mina during Benny Berthet Day. I must say he is a solid player but I wasn’t really impressed by his game.

– Rome’s finalist and clay court specialist David Ferrer was surprisingly beaten by Jurgen Melzer. Melzer and Gabashvili will meet on Monday for a place in the last eight.

– 2005 US Open semi-finalist Robby Ginepri defeated former Roland Garros champion Juan Carlos Ferrero in five sets to advance to play in Round 4 against Novak Djokovic.

2 other Spaniards qualify for the fourth round: Fernando Verdasco after an epic match against Philip Kohlschreiber, and Rafael Nadal.

In the women’s draw, Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic and Sam Stosur are through to next round. The clash between Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova was suspended by night at one set all.

Stat of the day: 1
The number of french players left in the tournament. Aravane Rezai and Marion Bartoli were beaten today by -respectively- Nadia Petrova and Shahar Peer, so, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is the last French standing.
The highest-ranked french player, Tsonga was a surprise finalist at 08 Australian Open. He confirmed his performance by winning the ’08 Paris Bercy Masters and reaching the semifinals at this year’s Australian Open.
Although clay is not his best surface, his fighting spirit and attacking game make him a crowd favorite, and he always play well in France. By reaching the fourth round, he equalled his best performance here: last year he reached the fourth round (beaten by Juan Martin Del Potro).

Some interesting matches to follow tomorrow:
– Nadia Petrova vs Venus Williams
– Roger Federer vs Stanislas Wawrinka
– Mikhail Youzhny vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
– Flavia Pennetta vs Caroline Wozniacki
– Marin Cilic vs Robin Soderling
