Australian Open day 8: Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka
Angelique Kerber defeats Annika Beck 6-4 6-0
“It was really tough match today. First of all, congrats to Annika for an amazing week, well done to her. She’s a great player with great future.
The first set was very close. It was up and down with breaks and I just tried to stay in the match, be aggressive and take my moments.”
Victoria Azarenka defeats Barbora Strycova 6-2 6-4
2-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka made a quick work of Barbora Strycova, who dispatched third seed Garbine Muguruza in the previous round.
“I was more focused on staying focused because she’s a type of player that throws you a lot off your rhythm. I was just trying to focus more on execution and be aggressive and follow my game plan from the first point to the last. But I think I played pretty well there. There are things I could have done better I think always. That’s the perfectionist in me. But overall, pretty solid.”
Azarenka and Kerber will next face in the quarterfinals. The former world number one won all their previous 6 meetings including the Brisbane final earlier this month. The winner of the match will be the favorite to advance to the final as she’ll play the winner of Johanna Konta vs Shuai Zhang in the semifinals.
