2017 clay court season: who won what

Rafa Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev on the men’s side, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and Kristina Mladenovic on the women’s side have dominated the clay court season; while world number ones Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber appeared in big trouble. Here’s our recap of who won what.


Marrakech: Borna Coric

Runner-up in Marrakech last year, Borna Coric came back from the brink, saved 5 match points to overcome Philip Kohlschreiber and capture his maiden ATP title.

Monte Carlo: Rafael Nadal

Rafa‘s reign in Monte Carlo continues: he defeated fellow Spaniard Ramos-Vinolas, who stunned Andy Murray en route to his maiden Masters 1000 final. With that victory, Nadal became the first man in the Open Era to win 10 titles at a tournament, and the first to win 50 clay-court titless, surpassing Guillermo Vilas (49).

Barcelona: Rafael Nadal

A week after his 10th Monte Carlo title, Rafa captured a 10th Barcelona title, beating Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-1 in the final. Nadal didn’t drop a set all week to win his second trophy of 2017.

Number one seed Lucas Pouille captured his second career title in Budapest, beating Aljaz Bedene in the final.

Munich: Alex Zverev

Alexander Zverev beat Guido Pella in straight sets to capture his first title on home soil.

Estoril: Pablo Carreno Busta

Semifinalist in 2015, finalist last year, Carreno Busta captured the Estoril title beating veteran Gilles Muller in the final. It’s Pablo’s third career title after his wins in Winston-Salem and Moscow last year.

Istanbul: Marin Cilic

Big servers Marin Cilic and Milos Raonic faced off in the final of the Istanbul Open. The 2014 US Open champion prevailed in straight sets and claimed his second claycourt title, and 17th overall, after not dropping a set all week.

Madrid: Rafael Nadal

Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid, treble complete for Rafa who picks up his 5th Madrid title, his 30th Masters 1000! to In a rematch of their Barcelona final, Nadal defeated Thiem 7-6 6-4. Rafa also put an end to seven-match losing streak against Novak Djokovic, beating him in the semifinals.

Rome: Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev stunned Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-3 to win his first Masters 1000. After his loss Djokovic confirmed that Andre Agassi will join his coaching team for Roland Garros.
Dominic Thiem put an end to Rafa’s 17 matches winning streak in the quarterfinals.

Stuttgart: Laura Siegemund

Runner-up last year, wild card Laura Siegemund beat 3 top 10 players (Svetlana Kuznetsova, Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep) en route to the final. She overcame Kristina Mladenovic in a thrilling match 6-1 2-6 7-6.
The tournament saw the comeback of Maria Sharapova after her doping suspension (she can thank her sponsor Porsche for the wild card), she lost in the semis to Mladenovic.

Prague: Mona Barthel

First tournament win in 3 years for qualifier Mona Barthel who clinched her 4th career title beating Kristyna Pliskova in 3 sets. Mona saved three match points in the second round of qualifying on her way to victory in the final.

Madrid: Simona Halep

Simona Halep retained her Madrid title after a hard-fought 7-5 6-7 6-2 victory over Kiki Mladenovic. It’s Simona’s first title since August last year. It was Simona’s third final in Madrid in four years, having lost to Maria Sharapova in 2014.

Rome: Elina Svitolina

Elina Svitolina is currently on a roll: she recorded her fourth title of the year, with a come form behind win over Simona Halep. With this win, she returns to the top 10 and reaches the top of the race to Singapore.
World number one Angelique Kerber suffered another early exit: she lost to Anett Kontaveit in the second round.
