2010 Wimbledon preview with Warwick Bashford

Thanks to Warwick, former coach of Marcos Baghdatis and Amélie Mauresmo, who answered our questions.

What do you think about Rafa’s victory in Roland Garros, and do you think he can regain the title in Wimbledon?
Unbelievable!! My hat goes out to Rafa!! It is a privilege to watch him play. Rafa is an excellent role model for all those fortunate enough to witness his genius, inspiring thousands by what he has achieved on European red clay over the past five years.
You can just tell that Rafa is a man in total control of his emotions. Something we can all learn from! Not only is he energized and focused, he is able to stay calm at the same time and play the big points when it matters most.
This takes practice, hours of hard work and he deserves it more than anyone else!! As far as Rafa’s chances on Winning at the All England Club again, it is definitely possible. It all depends on his recovery after a gruelling clay court season!! Another factor will be the weather. If it is dry, this will favour Rafa, as the ball will bounce higher like on clay. However, if it is damp & wet this will make it harder for him to get any rhythm.

After a disappointing clay-court season, Federer reached the final in Halle. Could we have a 2008 final rematch against Nadal?
I hope so!!! Their 2008 Wimbledon final was a classic and I’m sure anyone would agree that watching these two different styles battle it out in the final of any Grand Slam is a dream match to watch. It will depend who’s more focused, or should we say, less focused on the World Cup Soccer in South Africa:)

Ousted by Sela in Queen’s, Roddick only won 3 matches since his title in Miami. Does he still have a chance to win Wimbledon?
Personally, I was surprised with Roddick’s loss to Sela at Queens?? Maybe he was sick or something? Not to take anything away from Sela who is a great fighter. However, when Andy’s serve is on and we all know how much he wants the Wimbledon title, anything is possible!! Again this will depend on the grass and whether there is much sun or more rain and dampness??

Big servers John Isner and Sam Querrey are really consistant this season, do you think their game is complete enough to do well in Wimbledon?
For sure!! Having these 2 Americans battle it out in the final at Queens is proof that either one of them could be a dark horse at Wimbledon??

Note by Ludmillla: Querrey beat Fish in final, not Isner

What about former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt? He beat Roger Federer in Halle and he’s always dangerous on grass.
Lleyton is fired up and rejuvinated after a series of operations that have prevented him from competing at his best…….until now!! He has proved he can play the grass in the past by winning Wimbledon. However, it depends on his fitness. Playing solid for 2 weeks will be different than what he is used to??

So, your favorite for the title is … ?
FEDERER!!!

Roland Garros women’s final was one of the most surprising ever, do you think Stosur and Schiavone can do well on grass?
I’m not sure about Schiavone, the best she has done on grass at Wimbledon was the Quarters in 09. However, her confidence is up and with women’s tennis so unpredictable right now, you never know?? As far as Stosur, her best on grass at Wimbledon was a third round in 09. However, Samantha has matured both mentally and physically. Having beaten some top 10 players on her way to the French Open final, I hope she believes and is hungrier for the loss at the French to be Champion at Wimbledon??

Wimbledon is the only major missing for Justine Henin. Why is she not as successful on grass as on other surfaces, especially on clay?
Justine has it all to win on any surface, it again depends on her emotional and mental strengths on the day. On clay, she gets into a rhythm and builds mental and physical confidence. However, on grass it is much faster and the points end sooner. Justine will have to be more aggressive. As we have seen in the past, it is mentally where Justine has broken down on the big grass court arena. This year will be interesting, I can’t wait!!

So, could we have an all-Williams final again, like last year?
This will depend on the health of both girls, However, I’d like to see a new face, a new champion??

Your favorite for the title is…?
Venus or Serena?
